ADEA Annual Session Report

TO:

Sigma Phi Alpha Chapter Officers, Trustees, and Members

FROM:

Dr. Laura Joseph
President, Supreme Chapter Sigma Phi Alpha

DATE:

July 11, 2006

SUBJECT:

Report on Sigma Phi Alpha Annual Session, Orland Florida 2006

Sigma Phi Alpha’s Annual Session took place in conjunction with the American Dental Education Association’s 83rd Annual Session and Exhibition in Orlando, Florida on March 11, 2006. This year we continued our tradition of providing a joint continuing education program with the Dental Honor Society OKU.

The speaker for our program was Dr. Michael Barnett, Clinical Associate Professor of Periodontics/Endodontics from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. His presentation was titled Getting Started in Research: Challenges and Opportunities. The program was well attended and provided attendees with practical information regarding clinic research endeavors.

Following the two-hour presentation, Sigma Phi Alpha held its annual business meeting which included reports from the Board of Directors and presentation of this year’s HuFriedy Instrument Award. This year’s award was presented to the Tunxis Component Chapter in Connecticut. The Tunxis Chapter has been a creative and active chapter that plans to use the instruments to support community outreach efforts. Detailed minutes from this meeting will be presented at the March, 2007 session in New Orleans, LA.

In addition, the Board of Directors were pleased to announce that the first recipient of the SPA/ADEA Gies Linda DeVore Scholarship was Ms. Kelly Muhney from the University of Baylor, Dallas Texas. The award was presented to Ms. Muhney at the ADEA Annual Session Opening Ceremonies.

Other news included the announcement of a new award titled the Pfizer/SPA Manuscript Award for bachelor, masters or doctoral students. This award was created to acknowledge outstanding scholarly activities amongst advancing dental hygiene students. The award would be administered through ADHA and will be announced at the ADHA Annual Session in June, 2006. This award would provide $1000 to the recipient.

I look forward to serving as President of Sigma Phi Alpha during 2006-2007 term and welcome any ideas or thoughts on the future direction of our association.
