ADHA Annual Session Report

TO:

Sigma Phi Alpha Chapter Officers, Trustees, and Members

FROM:

Dr. Laura Joseph
President, Supreme Chapter Sigma Phi Alpha

DATE:

July 7, 2006

SUBJECT:

Report on 83rd ADHA Annual Session

The 83rd Annual Session of the American Dental Hygienist’s Association took place at the Contemporary Hotel and Convention Center from June 21 – 28, 2006 in Orlando, Florida.

On Friday June 23 from 8:30am – 11:00am, Sigma Phi Alpha provided its annual continuing education program to over 200 attendees. This year’s featured speaker was Ms. Maria Perno-Goldie, RDH, MS. She presented a program titled Dental Hygiene Around the World: Advancing Access for the New Age which discussed the practice of dental hygiene and licensure in numerous countries throughout the world. The program was well received and provided participants with contact information regarding dental hygiene practice in various countries.

Following the two-hour presentation, I presented a 30-minute overview of our goals, mission and activities for the past year. Our Immediate Past-President Harold Henson was in attendance as well as our Northeast District Trustee Leslie Andrews. The presentation focused on the number of scholarship opportunities available through SPA and it was my pleasure to introduce our newest award the Pfizer/SPA Manuscript Award which was recently finalized. A special thank you goes out to Christine Charles, Associate Director of Oral Care from Pfizer, Claudine Drew Past SPA President, and the American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s Administrative Staff for collaborating on this project. The award recognizes outstanding scholarship in the discipline of Dental Hygiene. We look forward to presenting the first award at next year’s ADHA’s Annual Session in New Orleans.

As President of the Supreme Chapter, I also presented Honorary Membership to Ms. Christine Hovliaras-Delozier in recognition of her commitment to advancing the profession of Dental Hygiene. In November of 2005, Ms. Hovliaras-Delozier was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Access, the national magazine for the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and is the founder and President of Professional Savvy an oral care consulting company. Congratulations Christine!

At this time, I would like to thank President Katie Dawson, RDH, BS along with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association for supporting Sigma Phi Alpha and providing us with a venue to offer educational programs that advance the profession. It was a special honor to be officially introduced along with other dental and dental hygiene associations during the Opening Session on Saturday, June 24.

In closing, I want to thank the BOD and the members for the honor of serving as your President. I also want to send out a personal thank you to Immediate Past-Presidents Harold Henson and Claudine Drew for their guidance and support throughout this past year. As we continue to move the organization into the future please e-mail me with any thoughts or ideas you may have regarding our future direction.
